Group music and movement sessions form part of the programme at Homai Early Childhood Centre. During some sessions we engage the children through Clonker Board activities (figure 1) and children and whānau alike are finding this a very social sensory experience.
The Clonker Board is a resonance board made from a sheet of ply raised off the ground on a frame of wooden batons. This acts like a drum that the children can sit or lie on and even the tiniest tap on the board is magnified. Activities on the board include greetings, name games, poems, stories, chants, ball games and rythmic tapping with various objects.
The children are naturally alert and excited by hearing, seeing and feeling the beats on the board. Clonker Board sessions are very inclusive and everyone has opportunities to participate as part of the group.
