The BLENNZ Gisborne Visual Resource Centre have three ORS learners with low vision attending Te Kura Kaupapa Māori in the Wairoa/Gisborne areas.
To enable these learners to quickly learn how to read and write letters and words we have focused on the Ngā Puoro O Te Reo programme that was developed by the Waikirikiri Bilingual School in Gisborne.
Each of the 15 letters of the Māori language has a catchy song that encompasses an action and formation instructions to help with consolidation of letter formations and sounds.
The programme and adaptations are being successfully used by class teachers with current BLENNZ learners and their classes in Kura Kaupapa and have also been shared with other centres in the central region. The learners using this programme have made significant progress with learning their letters and sounds and really enjoy singing the songs and making the actions.
